Fedora 13 Cool New Features

·       System Rollback feature with Btrfs

Btrfs lets you take light weight snapshots of the filesystem which can be mounted or booted into selectively. This means, before doing something crazy with your system, you can easily take a snapshot of the partition and in case something bad happens, just boot into the older snapshot.

In Fedora 13, codenamed Goddard, if you have selected one or more partitions as btrfs, then it will automatically create new snapshots with every yum operation. You will also be allowed to select which snapshot to boot into. This is indeed an amazing addition.

·       Design Suite Spin, to make Fedora look even better

This suite will contain all the required applications targeted at designers. Here is a list of the applications that are going to be included. The Fedora Design Suite includes well-selected applications, fitting a variety of use cases. Whether you decide to work on publishing documents, creating images and pictures or even 3D content, the Design Suite has a fitting tool.

·       Zarafa, a complete Open Source groupware suite is now available in Goddard

Zarafa is an open source groupware suite that can be used as a drop-in Exchange replacement for Web-based mail, calendaring, collaboration and tasks. Features include IMAP/POP and iCal/CalDAV capabilities, native mobile phone support, the ability to integrate with existing Linux mail servers, a full set of programming interfaces, and a comfortable look and feel using modern Ajax technologies.

·       NFSv4

NFSv4 aims to offer increase performance and seamless transition for the end-user. Fedora is the only distro till now using it.

You might want to check out some other Fedora spins coming out with Fedora 13, Goddard.

A whole list of the main, new features  in Fedora 13 can be found here.

·  boot.fedoraproject.org

boot.fedoraproject.org (BFO) is one of the unique features in Fedora. This effort by Fedora community hopes to completely remove DVD installations in long term. It allows users to download a single, tiny image and install current and future versions of Fedora without having to download additional images.

This method is similar to Pxeboot, can also be considered as a Fedora branded version of boot.kernel.org.

TATA Swatch Vs Hindustan Unilever Pure-it

TATA Swatch

After the Nano, the world’s cheapest car, Tata has now introduced the worlds cheapest water purifier in ‘TATA SWACH’. Swach is a Hindi word which means ‘Pure’. Tata Chemicals, which introduced this product today, said that it took the help of fellow Tata groups in the products’ research studies. Tata Swach’s main aim will be to get into the rural Indian market where pure water is still far from reality.

Swatch uses the simple technique of using Ash from rice milling to remove any existent bacteria or any visible particulates. Swach has two variants, one is priced at Rs.799 and the other at Rs.999. since both of these are under Rs.1000, Tata Chemicals is hoping that it’ll do well in the rural market.

Swach filter can take in 19 litres of water at a time and doesn’t need running water or electricity to do its function, much like the Hindustan Unilevers Pure IT.

Hindustan Unilever Pure-it

Pureit is a self-contained water purifier. It has dimensions (H X W X D) of 61 X 29 X 26 cm, and weighs 4.1 kg.

The Germkill battery kit purifies 1,500 litres of water at 25° C in moderately humid conditions. It’s expiry date is 2 years from manufacture and comes with an end of life indicator.

The plastic parts and the Germkill battery kit are made using food safe, non-toxic, engineering-grade materials.

Outlook >> links << Facebook

Facebook has joined the list of social networking sites available in the in-boxes of Outlook users, thanks to Microsoft’s (Nasdaq: MSFT) Outlook Social Connector.

Outlook users have been expecting Tuesday’s announcement since November, when Microsoft said the service would be included in its Office 2010 suite. The social networking giant joins professional networking service LinkedIn and social networking site MySpace in Social Connector. Microsoft also added support for Live Messenger in its Tuesday release.

Social Connector works by including a “People Pane” that provides information about each sender, including posts from other social networking services. The Social Connector also links to company Sharepoint sites, downloading activity feeds from colleagues and placing them into the same People Pane information flow.

Users can make friend requests using the connector, but cannot send replies directly from within the service. For that, they must go directly to Facebook or use an intermediary service, such as email.

The free service is available for Office 2010, Office 2007 and Office.

Boon for Sales?

Similar offerings have been available via plug-ins for a while. For instance, Xobni provides similar functionality, touting its abilities to help users quickly find hidden relationships among contacts and hunt down emails quickly.

While adding time-sucking social networking offerings to a stalwart of the corporate office environment might at first seem odd, it’s clearly an effort for Microsoft to keep its products relevant and at the center of users’ lives, said Sheri McLeish, an analyst with Forrester Research.

“I think Microsoft’s goal is really to propel and keep Outlook as that default location for people throughout their day,” she told TechNewsWorld.

Adding social networking features and a richer stream of information could help the job performance of marketing and sales employees, for whom having a fuller picture of their clients can be helpful.

More Social World

However, Social Connector’s lack of Twitter integration and of two-way communication for social networking will slow its adoption, maintained Forrester senior analyst Augie Ray.

Further, it’s not likely that it will put an end to frequent trips to social networking sites to post updates and media, he told TechNewsWorld.

Still, it marks a shift in our approach to such activities, Ray conceded — one in which such services become more “organically” intertwined with other activities, such as monitoring email.

“The idea with Outlook’s Facebook Connector isn’t to permit workers to get more done,” he observed, “but to permit them to know their peers and contacts better.”

Passwords Management !

Cryptography expert Bruce Schneier used to write his passwords down on a slip of paper and keep it in his wallet.

Today, he uses a free Windows password-storage tool called Password Safe that he designed five years ago and released into the open-source community. The desktop application lets users remember only one master password to access their password list.

But Schneier still recommends the paper method for people who don’t have their computers with them at all times like he does. “Either write the passwords down and put them in your wallet, or use something like Password Safe,” he said in an interview on Wednesday.

Encryption image

PGP creator Phil Zimmermann stores his passwords in an encrypted text file, which he described as a “cumbersome, manually operated password management system.”

And crypto cracker Karsten Nohl’s method is much simpler yet harder–he stores all his passwords in his brain.

“I use a nontrivial function to diversify passwords for every use,” Nohl said. “Disclosing anything about the function would lessen its strength. Security-through-obscurity, but only because I cannot compute any strong ciphers in my head.”

An informal survey of a dozen or so security experts reveals that some of them still rely on the paper and pen method. One respondent even admitted to succumbing to the post-it-note under the keyboard clich?! (If you do choose to write the passwords down you should avoid including the Web site or other identifying information, obviously.)

Password management isn’t sexy but it’s a problem that touches everyone who touches a computer. Not only are people forced to create new passwords at a dizzying level as they join social networks, do e-commerce and deal with frequently expiring passwords at work, but there are new and novel password theft methods all the time. Just this week Mozilla disabled a Firefox add-on that was intercepting login data and sending it on to a remote server.

There are a variety of solutions for people who want to upgrade from the paper-based practice. To cover them all would be an exhaustive and impossible task, but I’ll mention a few notables.
