Apple IPad Tablet Reviews

Apple Inc.will sell the newly unveiled tablet-style iPad starting at $499, a price tag far below the $1,000 that some analysts were expecting.

The iPad, which is larger in size but similar in design to Apple’s popular iPhone, was billed by CEO Steve Jobs on Wednesday as “so much more intimate than a laptop and so much more capable than a smart phone.”

Jobs, 54, a pancreatic cancer survivor who got a liver transplant during a 5 1/2-month medical leave last year, looked thin as he introduced the highly anticipated gadget, though he seemed to have more energy than he did at Apple’s last event in September.

The iPad has a 9.7-inch touch screen, is a half-inch thick, weighs 1.5 pounds and comes with 16, 32 or 64 gigabytes of flash memory storage. It comes with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity built in. Jobs said the device has a battery that lasts 10 hours and can sit for a month on standby without needing a charge.

The basic iPad models will cost $499, $599 and $699, depending on the storage size, when it comes out worldwide in March.

Apple will also sell a version with data plans from AT&T Inc. in the U.S.: $14.99 per month for 250 megabytes of data, or $29.99 for unlimited usage. Neither will require a long-term service contract.

Those 3G iPad models will cost more — $629, $729 and $829, depending on the amount of memory — and will be out in April. International cellular data details have not yet been announced.

Apple had kept its “latest creation” tightly under wraps until Wednesday’s unveiling, though many analysts had correctly speculated that it would be a one-piece tablet computer with a big touch screen, larger than an iPhone but smaller than a laptop.

Raven Zachary, a contributing analyst with mobile researchers The 451 Group, considered the iPad a laptop replacement, especially because Apple is also selling a dock with a built-in keyboard.

Sitting on stage in a cozy leather chair, Jobs demonstrated how the iPad is used for surfing the Web with Apple’s Safari browser. The CEO typed an e-mail using an on-screen keyboard and flipped through photo albums by flicking his finger across the screen. He also showed off a new electronic book store and a book-reading interface that emulates the look of a paper book, putting the iPad in competition with Amazon.com Inc.’s Kindle and other e-book readers.

Like iPods and the iPhone, the iPad can sync with Apple’s Macintosh and Microsoft’s Windows computers. Jobs said the iPad will also be better for playing games and watching video than either a laptop or a smart phone. Software coming with the iPad includes a calendar, maps, a video player and iPod software for playing music. All seem to have been slightly redesigned to take advantage of the iPad’s bigger screen.

Tablet computers have existed for a decade, with little success. Jobs acknowledged Apple will have to work to convince consumers who already have smart phones and laptops that they need this gadget.

“In order to really create a new category of devices, those devices are going to have to be far better at doing some key tasks,” Jobs said. “We think we’ve got the goods. We think we’ve done it.”

Mplayer (The Movie Player) Under Suse Linux 11.0

mplayer

First adding Installation Sources :-

Open YAST Control Center->Software->Installation Sources

You will be provided with a list of repositories, more than likely though, you will only have one. We need to add one to get MPlayer out of that repository.

Click on Add, then HTTP.

Now Fill it in as shown:

Server Name: packman.iu-bremen.de It is suggested that you try a mirror, essecially if it is down. Use this one if you cannot access the first one:

ftp://packman.links2linux.de/pub/packman/MIRRORS

Now in the YAST Control Center, click on Software Management.

You may notice that it will take longer to refresh, this is good. It is refreshing the list of software it has available on that repository you added earlier.

Once it’s done, look for the Filter field, click on search on the drop down box. Search for “mplayer”. More than likely you will get three parts returned. They should be something like this:

  • libpostproc
  • MPlayer
  • mplayerplug-in

If you got those three, check them all. If you didn’t please go back and check your repository again. The repository may be down, in which case try a mirror, then complete the installation.

You can now play movies using mplayer (try it in the commandline or from the KMenu).

Tip: Mozilla-based browsers will also have a plugin that will play items using mplayer.

Troubleshooting Solution :-

Mplayer Fails owing to a libdirectfb failure.

Open up a console such as xterm or konsole, and type:

$ su
Password: <type your root password>
# ln -s /usr/lib/libdirectfb-0.9.so.24 /usr/lib/libdirectfb-0.9.so.22

USB 3.0 and Linux

usb_3

“Ever get tired of Windows people proclaiming how their operating system has device support for this, that, and the other thing and Linux doesn’t? Well, now you have a perfect come-back. The newest, fast interface, USB 3.0 is out and only Linux has native support for it.

“Linux started supporting USB 3.0 in the September 2009 release of the 2.6.31 Linux kernel. Neither Windows 7 nor Snow Leopard currently supports USB 3. Windows support? That will have to wait for Windows 7 SP1 —whenever that shows up.

“Long before then, many USB 3.0 devices will have arrived. Some will doubtlessly have Windows drivers, but only Linux is USB 3.0 ready. USB 3.0, aka SuperSpeed USB, reaches new highs in PC peripheral speeds. USB 2.0 has a maximum throughput of 480Mbps (Megabits per second), which is fast — but these days, when you might want to move gigabytes of movies from one your PC to an external hard drive, it’s not fast enough. USB 3.0, by comparison, has a maximum throughput of 5 Gbps (Gigabits per second) .”

IPL 2010 Auctions 19 jan 2010

IPL

Eoin Morgan was the only English player to find a buyer at the Indian Premier League auction in Mumbai this morning as the eight franchises delivered a clear snub to the England team.

The names of current internationals Graeme Swann, Tim Bresnan and Jonathan Trott were read out by auctioneer Richard Madley but were met with silence as the IPL teams placed a player’s availability above all other requirements.

Anthony McGrath, Mark Ramprakash, Monty Panesar and Rob Key did not even get that far. As the auction dragged on Lalit Modi, the IPL commissioner, asked each team to write down players they wished to purchase. The rest were scrubbed from the list and a red line was put through the remaining English names.

Morgan’s first bid was launched by Bangalore Royal Challengers just as Madley was about to bring down his gavel. A further bid of $210,000 by Chennai raised Morgan’s price and he was eventually sold to Bangalore, where he joins England colleague Kevin Pietersen, for $220,000.

Swann was valued in the highest band at $250,000 but with England’s tour to Bangladesh cutting short his IPL time to three weeks, still nearly half of the tournament, he was always going to struggle to find a buyer.

“Availability is a serious issue for all the teams,” said Modi in a chaotic press conference. “When players are available 100 percent of the time the teams bear that in mind and is a major part of their strategy.”

In total 11 players were sold with two, Kieron Pollard from the West Indies and Shane Bond of New Zealand, earning the maximum offer of $750,000. Both were bought after a tie-break closed auction, after more than one franchise bid the full amount, with Mumbai Indians signing Pollard, whose ability to clear the rope during the Twenty20 Champions League in India last year rocketed his profile.

Bond, who at 34 has retired from international cricket, was welcomed into the IPL after being barred from the first two tournaments due to his links with the Indian Cricket League when he was bought by Calcutta.

Left-arm fast bowler Wayne Parnell made a tidy $610,000 from Delhi but his fellow South African, Tyron Henderson, who was sold to Rajasthan last year for a similar amount only to be released, failed to attract a buyer. The surprise purhcase was made by Rajasthan Royals who bought Damien Martyn, who retired from international cricket three years ago, for $100,000. Not a single Pakistani player was bought with franchises scared off by the political tension between the two countries and uncertainty over whether the Indian government would grant them visas.

The IPL begins on March 12 with the final in Mumbai on April 25.

Players sold:

Kieron Pollard $750k Mumbai

Kemar Roache $720k Deccan

Shane Bond $750k Calcutta

Damien Martyn $100k Rajasthan

Adam Voges $50k Rajasthan

Justin Kemp $100k Chennai

Wayne Parnell $610k Delhi

Mohammad Kaif $250k Kings XI Punjab

Yusuf Abdullah $50k

Thissara Perera $100k

Eoin Morgan $220k Bangalore

GOOGLE ATTACK :HOW IT HAPPENED ?

GOOGLE IN ATTACK …..

Researchers are busy trying to figure out just how hackers were able to plant malicious code in the corporate networks of Google and at least 20 other companies. That malicious code resulted in the theft of Google’s intellectual property and the attempted access of the Gmail accounts of Chinese human rights activists. It appears that Adobe may also have been hit by that same attack and Bloomberg News reported that Yahoo may have also been a victim. Another estimate said about 34 companies had been impacted but nobody knows at this point just how many companies will suffer from this attack. “I think the final number is going to be much larger than 34 companies,” says George Kurtz, chief technology officer at security firm McAfee.

Security experts are also scrambling to figure out which weaknesses in various software programs hackers were able to target. Typically, software vendors work to shore up their software against possible attacks with fixes known as patches but hackers sometimes discover holes before the software vendor does – a problem known as a zero day vulnerability. “We’ve looked at some of the samples of the [malicious code] and it does look like there’s a cocktail of zero day vulnerabilities,” says Kurtz, who declined to name the software vendors with those weaknesses. Kurtz has seen malicious code that exploits about 7 different weaknesses but he did not say how many of them were previously unknown to software makers.

Yesterday, at about the same time as Google’s announcement, Adobe also said that its network had been attacked. The [Google and Adobe] incidents appear to be related given the timing of the discoveries, but until our investigation is completed we won’t be able to confirm it,” says Jodi Sorensen, senior manager of corporate communications at Adobe.

Yesterday, Adobe also released patches for Adobe Reader and Acrobat zero day vulnerabilities. The timing of those announcements led some researchers to believe that the attack had been started with a targeted e-mail message sent to an employee who might have clicked on a PDF file that then used weaknesses in Adobe Reader to infect a PC with malicious code that then spread into the entire network. Based on discussions with people who were working on the case, Mikko Hyppönen, Chief Research Officer at security firm F-Secure, said he believed that the Adobe Reader vulnerability was one of the problems. Yet, Adobe says that in this particular instance, the company has no evidence at this time to suggest that a weakness in Adobe Reader or any other Adobe technology contributed to the attack. So far, McAfee’s Kurtz says his company has seen other problems but none so far with PDF and Adobe Reader.

General security advice for all users is have a strong password that is changed regularly and includes letters, numbers and symbols.

All security patches should be up-to-date and users should never open attachments unless they know the person they are being sent by and are expecting them.
