Use of Remote Desktop :Beneficial


Windows XP Professional has a feature that will allow you to create your own virtual private network connection by remotely connecting two Windows XP Pro computers, and you can do this without installing any software.

To use the remote desktop feature, follow these steps:

  1. HOST: On the host computer, right click My Computer>> Remote>> Check the checkbox “Allow users to connect remotely to this computer”
  2. CLIENT: If you use Windows XP, the client software is already pre-installed. Go to Start Menu>> All Applications>> Accessories>> Communications >> Remote Desktop Connection.
  3. CLIENT: If you use a pre-Windows XP system, you have to run msrdpcli.exe from the \support\tools folder of the Windows XP Professional installation CD.
  4. CLIENT: When the Remote Desktop Connection box appears, enter the IP address of the HOST and click “Connect”.

Create a System Restore pointClick Start>> All Programs>> Accessories>> System Tools>> System Restore. -
OR-You can also launch System Restore window by typing the command below, in the RUN box: %SystemRoot%\System32\restore\rstrui.exe

  1. Click Create a restore point, and then click Next.
  2. In the Restore point description box, type a name to identify this restore point. System Restore will automatically add the date and time that this Restore Point was created.
  3. To finish creating this restore point, click Create.

Repairing Internet Exp. / Outlook Express XP

you are having any of the following problems, you may find that repairing your Internet Explorer / Outlook Express application may help.

  1. If you click a hyperlink in an email message:
  • A blank page opens
  • The hyperlink does not function at all
  • You receive an error message
  1. Unable to type in text boxes in a search engine or website.
  2. Address bar search does not work.
  3. Or, if you encounter various error messages while browsing.

To fix most problems concerning IE/OE:

Go to Start>> Run. Type in:

rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 %windir%\inf\ie.inf [Enter]

(for accuracy, it is best to copy and paste the entire above command)

Or, you can repair IE/OE manually:

Microsoft Internet Explorer 6.x Repair for Windows XP:

  1. Go to Start>> Run. Type in: sfc /scannow [Enter]

(Notice the space between sfc and /scannow)

  1. Follow the onscreen prompts during the System File Checker process.
  2. Reboot your machine when completed.

Enhance Windows XP Menu and Shutdown Speeds

Note: The values for the tweaks listed below are a recommended value only and represent what has worked best on a variety of systems. If you are not comfortable trying this tweak for your system, please do not attempt it. Go to Start>> Run. Type in: regedit [Enter] or click OK.
Drill down to the following registry key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop

Click once on the entry titled: Desktop

The contents of the “Desktop” entry will now be displayed in the right pane.

Double click the entry titled: HungAppTimeout

Change the “Value data” to a value of: 4000

This change will control the delay that Windows uses to start the shutdown process. (1000 = one second)

Double click the entry titled: MenuShowDelay

Change the “Value data” to a value of: 20

This change will control the delay that Windows uses to display a menu or sub-menu.

Double click the entry titled “AutoEndTasks”

Change the “Value data” to a value of: 1

Changing this value to “1″ will turn ON this feature and will now automatically close all running applications when shutting down Windows. Note: With this feature on, you will not be given a prompt to save Windows.

Control Panel Shortcuts

The Run dialog gives you easy access to many different programs and options. To get to the Run dialog, click the Start button, then click Run. Type in the command and press Enter, to launch it. For example, type “control folders” (without the quotes) in the Run dialog and press ENTER. Here is a list of commands to use, and what they do:

Customize Start Menu

The start menu is much more customizable than previous versions of Windows. To make the Start menu display only the applications you want, rather than the default determined by Microsoft:

  1. Right-click in an empty section of the Start menu’s left column
  2. Select Properties >> Start Menu >> Customize.
  3. Here you’ll find a list of your most frequently used programs. (XP keeps track of what you use and what you don’t, then updates this list dynamically.)

Note: Don’t want your anyone to know that Pinball, Solitaire, and Quake all make your list? Go to the General tab, click Clear List, and set the counter to zero.

ShutDown Icon on Desktop

Creating a Shutdown OR Reboot Icon WindowsXP has a program called SHUTDOWN.EXE which allows you to easily create icons to shutdown or restart your computer. To create a shutdown shortcut on the desktop:

  1. Right click on an open area of the desktop
  2. Select New / Shortcut
  3. Enter in “shutdown -s -t 00″ – (no quotes)
  4. Press the Next button
  5. For the name, enter in anything you like. I just use shutdown. Click the Finish button.
  6. For a reboot, enter “shutdown -r -t 00″

Shutdown [{-l|-s|-r|-a}] [-f] [-m [\ComputerName]] [-t xx] [-c "message"] [-d[u][p]:xx:yy] Parameters:

  • -l – Logs off the current user, this is also the defualt. -m ComputerName takes precedence.
  • -s – Shuts down the local computer.
  • -r – Reboots after shutdown.
  • -a – Aborts shutdown. Ignores other parameters, except -l and ComputerName. You can only use -a during the time-out period.
  • -f – Forces running applications to close.
  • -m [\ComputerName] – Specifies the computer that you want to shut down.
  • -t xx – Sets the timer for system shutdown in xx seconds. The default is 20 seconds.
  • -c “message” – Specifies a message to be displayed in the Message area of the System Shutdown window. You can use a maximum of 127 characters. You must enclose the message in quotation marks.
